Why It’s Important to Clean Your PC

Many computer owners don’t bother to clean their computers. Keeping a computer physically clean is as important as keeping it free from viruses and other malicious attacks. Computers have many areas where dirt, dust, and grime can accumulate.


Leaving a computer unclean is a great hazard to your system. When a computer is not regularly cleaned air flow can be restricted which can lead to overheating. Overheating can lead to damaged hardware. This could cause you thousands of dollars in lost data, computer repair, and computer replacement.


Benefits of Cleaning Your Computer


There are many benefits to cleaning your computer regularly. Unclean computers can harbor germs and viruses. If your computer is not cleaned regularly, it can spread these germs and make you and others sick. Having a clean PC and workspace can make it easier to get work done making your time more productive.


A clean PC not only benefits the user, but the performance of the computer itself. A clean PC will run faster, last longer, and work better than an unclean system.


Cleaning the Inside of Your PC


To clean inside of your PC you’ll need a screwdriver, can of compressed air, a small handheld vacuum, unused paint brush, and a dust mask.


Step 1. Shutdown your computer and unplug it


Step 2. Disconnect all of your peripherals such as keyboards, mice, printers, speakers, scanners, and monitors. Disconnect any other cables such as your Ethernet cable.


Step 3. Move your computer to a clean and clear area where you can safely work on the machine


Step 4. Using your screwdriver, open your computer. Most computers have screws that hold down the side panel. After removing the screws on the computer case slip off the side panel.


Step 5. Put on your dust mask and use your can of compressed air to blow debris out of the machine. Don’t touch the inside of the computer unless necessary. Your body may disperse a static shock to the internal components of the machine such as the memory or Central Processing Unit.


Step 6. Clean the inside of a PC from top to bottom in a thorough motion. Make sure that you hold the can upright so as not to have any liquid leak out of the can. The air is at a freezing temperature when it comes out of the can so make sure not to let any frost form on your computer’s hardware.


Lastly, make sure that your heatsink fan is clean. The heat sink rests on top of your processor and it is a grouping of metal ridges on your motherboard. If this fan is not clean, your CPU will overheat and your computer’s performance can degrade and/or permanent damage can be inflicted on the machine.


Step 7. When you are finished dusting, look around the PC to see if there is any dust you may have missed. Use your paintbrush to wipe any tough spots clean.


The positives of having a clean computer far outweigh the negatives. Taking simple preventative measures to maintain your PC will save you a lot of time, money, and stress in the long run.
